A little too much... I don't think so!

Peppers that have been transplanted into containers
One could easily say that this year, I have gone over-board with seedlings. I have about 20-30 pepper plants and 10 Bhut Jolokia seeds in the small heated green-house. I also have about 12 little finger eggplants and 10 long purple eggplant seeds in the small greenhouse. I have beans in the greenhouse that have already sprouted. I have bitter melons too. As of right now, in my garden (raised bed & containers included)  I have onions, garlic, bok-choy, carrots (2 varieties), tomatoes (2 varieties), radishes, lettuce, cucumbers (2 varieties), peppers (many varieties), beans, peas, and herbs. That may not seem like a lot to many, but I really don't have much room to garden and the items I listed are in numbers more than 3 at least. I also have a ton of seedlings that I need to transfer to my garden soon. I am waiting to get some compost so I can fill up my containers and plant away. I am proud to say that this year, I only bought one set of seedlings from the store. Everything else was started from seed.

Pepper Seedlings

I must admit one thing, I may have gone a little overboard with my peppers this year. And thing is, I can't part with them because I don't know the varieties and am scared to give away any that I may not have more than one of. So they are staying for now. Wish me luck and if I get 15 of one variety then be prepared to see some tears, or to my Sacramento gardeners, be prepared to pick up some pepper plants from me. :) Even with this wandering mind about my pepper varieties,  I am very happy with my garden and hope that everyone's garden is flourishing! Until next time, Happy gardening everyone!

Garden Update

I've been making a few videos of my garden because a few of my friends on Youtube wanted to see my garden. Since I haven't received my lens for my Nikon D40 yet, I can't post up any pictures. Once I get that in, I will post up pictures. Until then, here is a link of the video.

Thank you for watching :)

Ghost...

Peppers that is! Look what came in the mail today! After much thought and consideration, I finally decided to order some Bhut Jolokia aka Ghost pepper seeds. They were pricey but I've been wanting these since last year and finally gave in. Now, I hope that I at least get 85% germination and have at least 5 plants. These plants will take much care and love. I will be heading to Home Depot tomorrow to get some Jiffy Soil mix and some starter pots so I can give these babies a wonderful start. Will keep y'all updated. Wish me luck!

Brief Garden Update

Sunflower like flower in my garden last year
The weather here in Sacramento, CA has been a little weird compared to what its been like for a past few years. I remember last year, I had all my plants in the ground and things were growing by this time, but this year seems cooler. I do have most of my plants in the ground, minus some tomatoes that still to grow a little, but they all seem to be stunted. The roses in the front yard are blooming now. About a week ago, mom and I prepared a corner in the front yard and spread wild flower seeds there. All of them are peeking through now. Makes both of us very happy. There is going to be a great mixture of flowers in that little lot. I am hoping for a couple of sunflower like flowers. Last year, when I spread wildflower seeds in a container in the backyard garden, I had a very pretty flower sprout. Although I am not sure of its name, it looked like a mini sunflower. Very pretty.

Aside from the wildflower "plot", the burgundy okra has sprouted as well. I saw them peeking through the soil in the starter seed containers when I checked on them today. The Burmese and Jade okra hasn't sprouted yet. I hope they trail behind those Burgundy okras soon. The backyard garden is coming along though. The cucumber plants have their true leaves coming on now. Tomatoes are coming along. Radishes have sprouted and are growing, growing and growing!

There's my short (right?) update. Worms will be here sometime next week. I ordered 1 lb from Ebay for $25.00. The worm bin is set up and is rotting away. I've read that the more microbes there is, the faster it is for the worms to break it down. I hope this goes well. :) I will keep updating.

I hope everyone's garden is flourishing! Happy Gardening everyone! :)

Worm Bin!

Two bin system
Today, I went ahead and started my worm bin. I watched a few videos on YouTube and tried to learn from them. I opted for the 2 bin system and used two old sterile bins I had. I shredded newspapers and layered bin #1 with newspapers and kitchen scraps. Prior to this, I drilled holes on the sides and bottom of bin #1, as well as on the lid. I placed two bricks in bin #2 to elevate bin #1 and placed the prepared bin #1 on top of the bricks. I added some garden soil and water in bin #1 as well. Tomorrow I will be ordering my worms via e-bay. I am thinking about 250-500 worms to start off. My bins are small, maybe 15-20 gallons so I want to keep it small to start. If I like the system, I will definitely expand it and will keep ya'll posted. Wish me luck!

The melting pot

Not a week goes by that I don't see a post or hear a comment about race, sex or gender. A comment that usually makes me wonder why people segregate so much and fall into the a weave that is hard to untangle. The world today has become a melting pot of cultures, traditions, races and ethnic backgrounds. People from many different walks of life walk amongst us and it is not up to us to judge them by their looks or their situations. It really bothers me to see people discriminate towards their own kind. Today I read a comment, "I am so done with Fijian Indians." The reason noted by this poster was, because they act like "wanna be blacks/whites." Although, I do agree that some Fijian Indians do try to be like other races, I don't see anything wrong or right with it. Each person has the right to choose who they want to be. I also think that a person should be able to accept who they are and not be ashamed of their identity. That said, I don't think its right for anyone to cluster a race together and post comments such as I hate blacks or whites blah blah yada yada.

I'm sure most of you watched that popular YouTube video by Alexandra who commented on Asians in the library. That was disturbing and while she got so much feedback and coverage, I think everyone that posts comments or videos or says things of that nature should always think twice. I've come a long way to be able to just look away from those comments, but some days it just irritates me to see shallow minded people who just cant keep their stupid comments to themselves.

I think this is more of vent then anything else. I thank you for reading. All comments are always welcome. And please remember, all I am trying to say is, We are all humans before anything else. Poor or rich, black, white or brown, skinny or fat, tall or short, gay or straight, we are ALL THE SAME! WE ARE HUMANS! Humanity comes before anything else.

Garden Addiction/Craze

I love gardening so much that I think its truly driving me crazy! I have so many seeds that I got for really cheap to free and don't have enough land to plant them. I have been trying to find people to share them with and have sent out quite a lot of seeds, which makes me really happy. I am also still in the works of adding another raised bed on the concrete in my backyard. That will probably take place sometime next week. Today I stopped by Home Depot and they had an amazing sale on the Super Soil potting mix. They are normally around $5 and today they were $2.48 per 1 cubic feet of soil. I got 3 bags for my pepper plants I will be transplanting in a week or so. I might go back tomorrow and buy 5 more bags that I could add to the raised beds once they are done. The garden is doing ok. I am really impressed with my pepper plants. is stared them about a month ago in my brother's grow room and they are doing wonderful. I have about 15 pepper seedlings right now and I hope they all make it. I had one lonely seed left of the black ornamental pepper from last year and I am desperately trying to sprout it. This year I plan on growing 4 varieties of tomatoes, Early Girls, Roma, Pink Brandywine, and Money Maker. They are all heirlooms and from what I've heard, they are very delicious. I am also attempting lettuces again. I currently have Black Crimson loose leaf lettuce sowed in the garden and I really hope they make it. I also have Spinach sowed in between the onions in the raised bed and really hope they sprout. I am looking forward to some delicious salads in the near future. The bokchoy is slowly growing. It has all of April to grow and then it will probably be too hot for them. I also have peas growing quite nicely. Last night I soaked three different varieties of okra, Jade, Burgundy and Burmese. Once those sprout, I will be planting them in starter pots and later transplanting them to the front yard. Mom said it was ok and since we are growing the Burgundy okra for the first time, I am sure she is just as curious I am about them. With so much anticipated for this season, I hope everything turns out at least half as good as I am hoping. My goal is to prove to my family that we can live off of the stuff we grow. Last year, I did that with my tomatoes but everything else was a little blah. I learned alot from last year and I hope, really really hope, that I can do better this year. I will try to take pictures of the what is going on in the garden later this week. Until then, happy gardening!
